This year marks the 100th anniversary of the U.S. national
wildlife refuge system. Please join us at the Don Edwards National Wildlife
Refuge in the South Bay for a Spring day filled with a variety of exciting,
informative and fun-filled activities. You will also have a chance to visit
special anniversary exhibits (including the "Time Capsule"), lunch and network
with your colleagues from throughout Northern California in an extraordinary
wetlands setting. Start your day with a slide show on why this National
Wildlife Refuge was created, and what makes it unique. Learn about the town of
Drawbridge and the history of the Bay. Discover the diverse spring habitats
from the hilltops to the marsh (Botanical Wanderings tour led by
Alvin Dockter). Learn about the tectonic forces and alluvial deposition that
formed this interesting estuary (Geological Tour led by Chris
Palmer). Take pictures of the snowy white egrets along the way. Be sure to wear
comfortable clothes and shoes.

Ed Kantack has been an Educational/Outreach volunteer for the Don
Edwards Visitor Center for many years. He will be conducting a slide show
orientation that will give a brief history and background of the seven San
Francisco Bay area refuges, and what makes the Don Edwards wetlands habitat
unique.
Alvin Dockter is a recently retired Biology Teacher. He is also a
photographer and has been a Refuge volunteer, conducting nature hikes, for
fifteen years. Before joining Don Edwards, he worked as a Park Naturalist at
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park. He has contributed to many projects at the Refuge,
including compiling the first Plant List, which will be made available to field
trip attendees.
Chris Palmer is a Hydrogeologist Consultant, who also teaches classes in
hydrogeology at UC Extension. He will be conducting a leisurely and
entertaining walking tour of the geology of the refuge, a unique estuary. A
handout will also be provided.
