THE MAGIC OF CERAMICS EXHIBIT AT UCI. This exhibit coincides with theCentennial Anniversary of the American Ceramics Society and the 50th Annual Pacific Coast Meeting on Ceramic Technology being held in Irvine.
The Exhibit will run from October 19-November 13 and SEAL has a special program on TUESDAY, OCTOBER 27, 1998 at 6:30pm. The program will be a dinner meeting featuring a tour of the exhibit, a short presentation by Mark
Glasper, Communications Director at ACS in Columbus, who will share some experiences, observations and ideas about the exhibit and the role of science communication for elementary and secondary students. This exhibit has travelled widely this year to conferences and science museums and will be open for school groups while in Southern California. There will be time
for discussion.

The exhibit is a fascinating glimpse at how clay, sand and other common earth materials are transformed into many important high-tech applications, beautiful pottery and other traditional ceramics such as tile and dinnerware. "The Magic of Ceramics" exhibit encompasses six separate displays:

* Bioceramics - depicts the many uses for ceramics within the human body, including joint implants, bone and eye substitutes and dental applications, among others;

* Automotive - illustrates the tremendous extent to which ceramics are used intoday's cars from engine components and electronic applications to catalytic converters and spark plugs;

* Everyday Uses - explains the numerous ceramic applications people come in contact with daily. Brick, tile, dinnerware, light bulbs, scissors, watches, baseball bats, golf shoe spikes, refrigerator magnets, and even cubic zirconis jewelry are examples of ceramics in this display;

* Properties - this display features many ceramic applications that
were developed because of ceramics unique characteristics, including heat,
wear and corrosion resistance, strength, and electrical and optical
properties;

* The Enablers - showcases the unseen uses for ceramics that enable us and further technology. Examples include fiber-optic cable, nuclear fuel, fiberglass insulation and computer applications;

* Art Pottery - pays homage to some of the most traditional uses for ceramics, including glass sculptures, ornate vases and even Presidential dinnerware used for official state dinners in the White House. If you have children, this may be an interesting event to which to bring them. They are welcome. Please register below.
