Jim Schmidt has more than twenty-five years of experience as a manager in public and private academic libraries in Michigan, Texas, Ohio, New York, Rhode Island, and California. He served as library director at the State University of New York - Albany, and at Brown University and is currently at San Jose State University. From 1981 through 1989 Jim was Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Research Libraries Group. From 1985 through 1989 he served as a member and chair of ALA's Intellectual Freedom Committee. From 1989 through 1991 he was President of the Freedom to Read Foundation. In the 70's Jim chaired ACRL's Academic Status Committee when the seminal standards documents on faculty status for academic librarians were developed and adopted. Dr. Schmidt holds the masters degree from Columbia and the Ph.D. from Florida State University. He is the author of more than 35 published articles and has been invited to speak at more than 40 professional conferences.
