Alternative A

1. Request is made for copy of tape
2. Archivist makes a copy of the requested tape
3. Tape copy is mailed to requestor

• CARL pays costs for tape, for mailer, and for postage to mail the tape to the requestor
• CARL treasurer reimburses archivist for tape, mailer and postage expenditures

• CARL is not selling the tapes. This means fewer questions about copyright and releases.

Disadvantages:

• CARL absorbs costs.
• Tapes can not be reissued to another requestor.
• Tapes can not be reused.

Alternative B

1. Request is made for tape
2. Archivist makes a copy of the requested tape
3. Tape copy is mailed to requestor
4. Tape copy is mailed back to CARL

• CARL pays costs for tape, for mailer, and for postage to mail the tape to the requestor
• Requestor pays to return the tape
• CARL treasurer reimburses archivist for tape, mailer and postage expenditures

• CARL is not selling the tapes. This means fewer questions about copyright and releases.

Disadvantages:

• CARL absorbs costs.
• Tapes may not be returned.

Alternative C

• Request is made for copy of tape.
• Requestor pays $4 for each audiotape and $8 for each videotape
• Archivist makes a copy of the requested tape
• Tape copy is mailed to requestor
• Payment is forwarded to the CARL treasurer
• CARL treasurer reimburses archivist for expenditures for tapes, mailers, and postage

• CARL does not pay the costs of tape distribution from its treasury.

• Even though little or no profit would be made, CARL is selling tapes. There is a remote possibility of this leading to problems with releases.
• This alternative creates more work for the treasurer and the archivist, for what will probably be a small amount of money.
