December 1, 1995 To: CARL Executive Board From: Deborah Schaeffer, Interest Group Coordinator - South Subject: Annual report CARL SOUTH INTEREST GROUPS 1995 Each of the six interest groups sponsored at least one program this year, with three sponsoring two. I consider all successful! The topics were varied and attendance was gratifying. SEAL South even repeated its successful program on science reference to LAPL staff and administrators! Next year's chairs/presidents are as follows: ABLE South - Carol Z. Womack, University of California, Irvine DIAL South - Carolyn Y. McIntosh, Cal State Los Angeles SEAL South - Ruth Gustafson, University of California, San Diego As you can see, there is no listing for CARLDIG South, CSUL South, or CALM South. Each is having problems finding someone willing to take a leadership role for 1996. Even worse is CALM South, which I understand may be dormant next year. I feel that people are so busy and already are committed to other responsibilities. I think we need new blood in the organization and am not sure how to get more people involved in planning. I do feel that CARLDIG and CSUL eventually find leaders, but I am worried about CALM. The role of the Interest Group Coordinator, in my opinion, is to serve as a resource person and a liaison to and from the Executive Board. These groups are very independent and there is nothing wrong with that. I am hoping that since the conference will be in the South next year, that the interest groups will be able to make valuable contributions, if they so choose to do, to the program. I think they would like to feel more a part of the whole organization. I have enjoyed my year on the Board and wish next year's officers the very best. It has been a pleasure to serve with you. Respectively submitted, Deborah Schaeffer Southern Interest Group Coordinator
