CARL SERVER TASK FORCE REPORT

CHARGE

To recommend options for Internet access to CARL documents and services for membership.

CURRENT INTERNET-BASED TECHNOLOGIES USED BY CARL

1. Several email reflectors maintained at UCSC.

2. The CALIBACA listserv maintained at SJSU SLIS.

ASSUMPTIONS SHARED BY THE TASK FORCE

1. A CARL Server is an idea whose time has come.

2. The World-Wide Web is currently the best interface option.

3. A CARL Home Page would facilitate the following -

Supplement and archive the print version of the CARL Newsletter;

Supplement, update and archive selected CARL documents such as rosters, directories, minutes, reports, announcements, calendars, policies, manuals, forms, etc.;

Supplement or replace selected CARL paper-based mailings.

4. Every Web site needs a Web Master.

SERVER ALTERNATIVES CONSIDERED BY THE TASK FORCE

1. Server space DONATED by a friendly institution.

2. Server space RENTED from a commercial provider.

3. Server PURCHASED by CARL.

RECOMMENDATIONS

1. Establish a CARL Home Page on the World-Wide Web.

2. Identify a friendly institution willing to donate (or to provide at a minimal cost) access to and space on an Internet server; negotiate
flexible terms of use; a possible friendly institution is the CSU Chancellor's Office (Electronic Information Publishing Services http://www.calstate.edu/library/libweb.html).

3. Identify a Web Master with skills and experience to coordinate solicitation, mark-up and input of appropriate content and links; this could also be handled by a two-person team consisting of a CARL Server Administrator and a CARL Web Page Editor.

4. Establish a plan (including timetable, responsibilities, and resources) to solicit, transmit, select, edit, mark-up, input, and maintain appropriate content and links; over time, content mark-up could be required prior to submission.

5. Use the outline provided by Bill Whitson (in an email to the Task Force dated 20 May 1995) as a starting point for the scope of appropriate content.

6. Continue indefinitely appropriate printed CARL mailings.

7. Continue indefinitely the CALIBACA listserv and the email reflectors.
