ASSESSING OUR IMPACT: MAKING THE TRANSFORMATION TO ASSESSMENT
Looking to make the move to assessment of your information literacy program? This workshop will focus on an introduction to assessment, and provide teams of librarians the opportunity to transform a document or definition from their information literacy program into an assessment format.

Topics Covered:

INTRODUCTION TO ASSESSMENT
The basics of assessment will be introduced, including what assessment is, how it can assist us in planning and evaluating, the theories and importance of this initiative. How can assessment help us determine what we are doing well and what we need to improve or change?

TRANSFORMING TO OUTCOMES
Teams from the same library will transform an existing document from their own institution into an outcomes format. Teams can choose from their current definition of information literacy, a commonly taught 50-minute session, an information literacy course, or other meaningful document. Through a guided workshop format, we'll create something new that is relevant to your current work. Do you work alone on instruction? No problem. We'll pair you with someone else in the same situation. The important component is that you will have the opportunity to work on a document that is relevant to your own setting.

PROGRAM ASSESSMENT
We'll examine as a group what makes a strong instruction program. Teams will then look to write program outcomes and assessment measures for determining instruction program effectiveness on their campuses.

Debra Gilchrist is Director of Library/Media Services for Pierce College, a community college in Lakewood, Washington. Prior to her position at Pierce, she was Instruction Librarian at Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma, Washington. Debra has given presentations and published in the areas of library instruction, outcomes assessment, the teaching library mission, and faculty/librarian collaboration. She is currently serving as the Dean of Immersion Faculty of the ACRL Institute For Information Literacy which offers the yearly, five day intensive Immersion Program.
