Make your ABLE Connection

CARL/ABLE South (Academic Business Librarians Exchange)  2003 Fall Program

Designing and assessing student business research assignments:  Strategies for business faculty and librarians.

October 24th 9:00-2:00 CSU Northridge

Co-Sponsored by SCIL Southern California Instruction Librarians

Do you want to improve the quality of student business research  reports?  Are you concerned that students rely too heavily on the web for their  sources? How can you assess the quality of their business research?

Join Southern California business faculty and librarians as we explore the best strategies for designing and assessing business research assignments. Bring your own research assignment, see successful examples from your colleagues, and leave with new or revised research assignments and assessment methods. Or bring course objectives and leave with a completed research assignment and assessment plan that fits into the learning outcomes of the business curriculum.

This is an opportunity for ABLE-South librarians to invite your business faculty to spend a Friday morning working together to create assessments that measure information competencies. Business faculty participation is encouraged and welcome but not a requirement for attendance.

The day's agenda will include short takes on successful research assignments and assessment examples to prime your creativity. Afterwards you will have an opportunity to develop or refine your own research activities. Finally you will hear examples from business schools that are building information competencies into their curriculum and using them in student learning outcomes.

You have an opportunity to participate:

Present short takes of 15-20 minutes on the workshop theme of business instruction and assessment. Submit a title, speaker names and an abstract of up to 200 words to Ann Fiegen, Cal State San Marcos,  afiegen@csusm.edu  (760-750-4365) by September 15. Those selected will be notified by September 21. Finished presentations must include an abstract and samples in electronic format deliverable at the meeting. Selected presentations will be submitted to Merlot (Multimedia  Educational Resource for Learning and Online Teaching) http://www.merlot.org  after the workshop.

This workshop will build on continuing state-wide initiatives in California academic communities to build information competencies in the disciplines. Developing common strategies between business faculty and librarians is one more step toward that objective.
