Map Room Blog

The UCSC Libraries' Map Room maintains a blog that is used to create a searchable historical record of difficult reference questions. It makes a great training tool for persons learning to work with the map collection. The Blog also provides the reference librarians at UCSC with a better understanding of the kinds of questions that can be answered using cartographic resources. See http://internal.library.ucsc.edu/mt/maps/

10:30-11:15

Monica Fusich, Reference Librarian, California State University Fresno

Reference Desk Blog and Sabbatical Blog.

Monica will first discuss the implementation of a Reference Department blog to facilitate communication between library faculty and students staffing the Reference Desk. She will then highlight the creation and use of a personal blog during her sabbatical last year. See http://referencedesknotes.blogspot.com/  and http://monicassabbatical.blogspot.com/

11:15-Noon

Paula Hammet, Collection Development Coordinator & Web Coordinator, Sonoma State University

Erin Bower, Reference and Instruction Librarian, Sonoma State University

Use of blogs for specific library communication needs

As part of the process of redesigning our website, librarians at Sonoma State University looked at blogs as a means to meet specific library communication needs: internal communications, external marketing of library resources and services, training, documentation of technology implementation, and current awareness of trends & technologies. We created goals & objectives for each blog (tied in to our strategic plan) and created a distinctive but cohesive voice for each blog.
