Meeting Announcement:
The CARL-North Information Technology Interest Group was created to provide
high quality and affordable professional development workshops on all aspects of
Information Technology which impact our working lives. Our goal is to provide
needed IT skills upgrades for librarians who want it.
Our next meeting to plan a workshop on creating and setting up web blogs will be
on:
Monday, April 25, from 6 pm - 8 pm at Santa Clara University's Orradre
Library in Room 207 (proceed upstairs, down the hall, and to the right).
For this meeting there will also be a short tour of SCU Library's new ARS (see
below for more information).
If you are planning to attend this program planning meeting, please contact Mari
Miller at:
mmiller@library.berkeley.edu
If you are interested in planning future programs, events, or workshops on
InformationTechnology, or have a particular skill in Information Technology and
would like to give a presentation, or if you just want to tell us what your
greatest IT need is, also please contact Mari Miller.

Tour of the SCU's ARS:
The Automated Retrieval System (ARS) stores a large quantity of books and
other materials in a single structure and makes them quickly accessible when
requested by library users. A large rack system holds many steel bins and a
crane in each aisle of the system retrieves and replaces the bins on demand.
The system works by identifying and locating items by their bar codes. Storage
takes up one-seventh of the space needed for conventional shelving, and allows
for on-campus automated retrieval in minutes instead of days for off-site
storage. At Santa Clara University, a key benefit of the system is the ability
to store up to 900,000 volumes in an on-campus location. Most of the library
collection will be housed in the facility while a new library is being built to
replace the old structure. Currently, there are fewer than ten other automated
retrieval systems in use at university libraries in the U.S.
For those who want to get something to eat before the meeting: There is a
Quiznos sandwich place within walking distance.
