*Program Details:*

9:00 - 9:50 Registration, Continental Breakfast, Welcome

9:50 - 10:50 *Library/Librarian Blogs *- CARL Technical Services Interest Group - South

Web logs (aka ‘blogs’) are becoming mainstream. Should you establish a blog; if so, how? What do you do with a blog once you have one? What are the benefits and limitations of blogs? A panel of experienced bloggers will discuss the nuts and bolts of blogging and the impact of blogs at their institutions.

10:50 - 11:00 Break

11:00 - 12:00 * RSS for Librarians - A Really Simple Introduction to a Really Useful Communication Tool* - CARL Information Technology

You may have heard about RSS or seen the symbol for it (a small orange XML button) on some web pages. If so, you may wonder what it means and of what use it can be to you. RSS (Really Simple Syndication) is a method that allows organizations to package news and alerts for their users and provide access in one place. RSS can be used to “push” library news and events to users, add dynamic content to library pages and to get database alerts to end users. We will discuss readers, simple library applications and services that are now "RSS able".

12:00 - 1:00 Lunch

1:00 - 2:20 *Myth, Magic and Reality of Federated Searching: Implications for Reference and Instruction* - California Academic Reference Librarians Discussion Group - South

A moderated discussion of the top reference and instruction issues related to federated searching. CARL Members are invited to submit issues for discussion to Jacqueline Solis at jacqueline.solis@csun.edu

2:20 - 2:30 Break

2:30 - 3:00 *Waldo and the Full Text: Guiding the Path from Citation to Article* Research Presentation by E. Carol Dales and Caroline Bordinaro, CSUDH.

Overview of the preliminary results of a website usability survey conducted to determine whether users can easily locate the full text of specific articles for which they already have citations. The survey results, combined with actual user analysis, will guide the design of significant portions of the CSU Dominguez Hills Library website.

3:00 - 3:30 *The Impact of USB Drives on Student research and the Implications for  Technology Planning in Academic Libraries* Research Presentation by Amy Wallace, CSUCI.

This presentation will focus on a two-semester study examining the use USB drives in research intensive courses. It will include a discussion of how the study’s findings can help libraries reconsider the kinds of information storage and sharing technology offered in public service computing areas, as well as new avenues for expanding the library’s role as a key technology provider in the research process.
