California Academic Reference Librarians Discussion and Interest Group CARLDIG North Program

Staffing and Workload Issues in Reference and Public Services

Friday, May 1, 1998
1:30-4:30pm

Graduate Theological Union, Berkeley, CA

What is going on out there at the reference desk?

How have changes in technology, management structure, and instructional programs affected librarians on the front lines of public service?

How has remote access to resources affected in-person user demand?

What services do we no longer provide to allow us to do all these new activities?

Have the jobs -- and numbers -- of reference librarians changed along with the environment?

Why is it that even with all of the technologies and services that allow patrons to work more independently, we still feel busier than ever?

Plan to join us on May 1 for an afternoon of presentations and discussions on issues related to workload and staffing in public services. Four speakers will discuss issues and solutions to staffing problems. We will follow the presentations with open discussions. Bring your problems, your solutions, and your questions.
