Contingent upon availability of state funding.


The Reference Librarian is responsible for the library instruction program, all reference activities, collection development, and the maintenance of the integrated library system and the library website. The Reference Librarian serves as acting director in the absence of the Library Director. As a member of the faculty, the Reference Librarian serves on various college committees and represents the library at appropriate local, state or national meetings.


In addition to the responsibilities of the classification description, the specific position is also responsible for:

1.Provide reference service (in-person, telephone, email and web-based Live chat) to students, faculty and staff.

2.Schedule and provide library instruction and orientation through class presentations, workshops and web-based instruction.

3.Teach courses on library and information skills.

4.Promote library services and resources to students and staff via outreach, multi-media displays, and presentations.

5.Obtain and organize statistical data to fulfill required institutional reporting.

6.Design and conduct service assessments and surveys.

7.Coordinate and oversee Library newsletter publication.

8.Develop and revise library policies and procedures.

9.Select materials for collection development according to specific curriculum needs and serve as a library liaison with other faculty.

10.Participate in budget development, long- and short-term goals, grant writing, strategic planning, and program evaluation and reporting.

11.Provide assistance in the cataloging and bibliographic management of Library materials in various formats.

12.Provide assistance in selecting, evaluating and implementing electronic resources, databases, computer applications and other information systems.

13.Manage integrated library system and maintain Library website; develop and manage all electronic resources and services; act as liaison with IT department and external vendors.

14.Provide leadership and coordination for Library’s instruction program; work with colleagues to determine appropriate ways to infuse information literacy across curriculum and to diverse learners.

15.Work closely with IT staff and other departments in the design of innovative multimedia and web-based instruction modules.

16.Perform other duties as assigned.

Representative Duties:

The responsibilities of the Reference Librarian include but are not limited to the following:

1.Assisting faculty, staff and students in the use of print and automated library sources.

2.Developing and teaching information-seeking skills to faculty, staff and students. With the assistance of relevant faculty, plans and coordinates library resources in relation to new classroom learning.

3.Selecting and recommending automated and print sources for purchase by the library.

4.Writing and releasing procedures for circulating the general collection, reserve and periodicals collections, and for the utilization of the reference collection.

5.Assisting in the selection, training, and supervising of employees within departments. Serves as acting director in the absence of the Library Director.

6.As a member of the faculty, serving on various college committees.

7.Representing the library at appropriate local, state or national meetings.

8.Assisting in grant-writing activities with various faculty and administrators, as needed.

9.Development and assessment of student learning outcomes.

1.Librarians are required to show examples of activities which demonstrate a pattern of academic, professional, and/or technical updating or currency.

6.Provides assistance and help to other full-time, part-time and/or new librarians.

7.Coordinates plans and activities with others.

8.Provides information for the development of departmental budgets.

9.Monitors expenditures to keep within authorized budget spending appropriations.

10.Exercises good judgment in the use of and/or management of facilities, equipment and supplies.

11.Attends assigned meetings as requested.

12.Is punctual to assigned meetings.

13.Works well with peers, classified staff and administration.

14.In general, is easy and cooperative to work with.

15.Does his/her fair share of departmental duties and responsibilities, including contributing to unit plan and program review processes.

College-wide service

1.Volunteers to serve on College committees.

2.When requested serves on College committees and project teams.

3.Serves as a sponsor to student clubs and organizations.

4.Participates in faculty governance.

5.Participates on special project teams or ad hoc committees.

Community service (optional)

1.The College values the contributions made to the local community by the instructional staff, however, such contributions are at the option of the instructor and are not a formal requirement of the position.


•Master’s degree in library science, or library and information science OR

•Possession of a current California Community College Credential that permits full-time service as an instructor in the applicable discipline. OR

•The equivalent.

•Experience working in Community College Libraries, with an emphasis on reference services, collection development and library instruction.

•Knowledge of LC cataloging, library automation systems and HTML.

•Current awareness of trends in library services and distance learning in higher education.

•Strong interest in, and knowledge of, the use of technology in information delivery and library services.

In order to qualify under this process you must be currently working toward the degree requirement. In order to complete your application, you are required to submit (1) current transcripts and (2) a letter from your Advisor confirming your academic standing in the program and forecasted completion date. The completion date must be no later than June 1, 2015.

All offers of employment are contingent upon the submission of official transcripts showing completion of the degree.
