The Contra Costa County Library is inviting applications from enthusiastic and innovative library professionals to fill three (3) vacant Library Specialist positions. There are two (2) vacancies that specialize in Virtual Library Services and one (1) vacancy that specializes in Children’s Services. The individuals selected will play a vital lead role in providing high quality library services in an innovative and dynamic setting. Under direction, Library Specialists act as a specialist in library systems and web technologies, subject-matter or age-level area in the County Library System; to perform varied and complex professional work including but not limited to the use of emerging technologies to develop and deliver effective library service models that support reference, instruction, and information seeking behaviors; develop and manage digital content and services; deliver library services to support various user groups including adults, teens, children, college students and faculty; promote reading and literacy; provide community outreach; and market and promote library services and resources to the public.

The County Library operates twenty-six (26) community libraries within a 750 square mile area and serves close to 1 million urban, suburban, and rural patrons with an annual circulation reaching 7.4 million. Contra Costa County Library actively promotes reading, maximizes the use of library collections, and offers programs and services that encourage reading. The County Library is proud to be recognized as having one of the State’s most successful literacy programs.

The eligible list established from this recruitment will remain in effect for six months.

   Typical Tasks:
  • Answers information requests and advises readers on use of collections and services
  • Develops and maintains specialized collections
  • Collaborates with other library specialists and departmental staff to provide an integrated program of library services
  • Gives presentations before community and staff groups
  • Plans, coordinates, implements and evaluates departmental approved projects
  • Provides reader’s advisory services
  • Instructs patrons on the use of library services and technologies
  • Develops and provides solutions for staff training
  • Compiles and analyzes statistics and prepares reports of unit activities and operations
  • Keeps current with, and provides recommendations on, emerging trends and technologies
  • May provide library course-related instruction, curriculum development, reference assistance, and collection development to community college students and faculty
  • May plan, coordinate, implement and evaluate projects and activities related to electronic and online resources in all formats, including the Library catalog, internet resources, online library database resources, the Library’s internet and intranet presence, and local community information
   Minimum Qualifications:
  License Required: Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s License. Out of state valid motor vehicle operator’s license will be accepted during the application process

Education: Possession of a Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from a school of librarianship accredited by the American Library Association.

Experience: Two (2) years of full-time or its equivalent professional library experience

2. Application Evaluation: Depending on the number of applications received, an Application Evaluation Board may be convened to evaluate and select the best-qualified candidates for invitation to the next phase of the examination.

3. Oral Interview: An oral interview will be conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board in Martinez, CA. The Board will evaluate candidates in job-related areas. Candidates must receive a rating of at least 70 from a majority of the Board members to be ranked on the employment list. (Weighted 100%)
