Librarian-in-Residence – Loyola Marymount University

Loyola Marymount University seeks an energetic, self-directed entry-level librarian for the position of Librarian-in-Residence. This is a full-time, two-year visiting appointment.

Loyola Marymount, founded in 1911, is a comprehensive university in the mainstream of American Catholic higher education. Located on the west side of Los Angeles overlooking the Pacific Ocean, LMU is one of the nation’s 28 Jesuit colleges and universities and five Marymount institutions. It serves 6,000 undergraduates and 2,200 graduate students in the Colleges/Schools of Liberal Arts, Science and Engineering, Business Administration, Communication and Fine Arts, Film and Television, Education, and Law. The William H. Hannon Library ( was opened in 2009 and serves as the intellectual and cultural hub of the university. The William H. Hannon Library Librarian-in-Residence Program offers an entry-level librarian an opportunity to begin a career in academic librarianship. The program reflects the library’s and university’s commitment to achieving inclusive excellence and ethnic and racial diversity among our staff, including our librarians. The Resident will receive the full advantage of a librarian appointment, including financial support for professional development, plus mentorship and the opportunity to learn about specialization within the profession.


The residency will provide an overview of professional library work through assignments in diverse functional areas, determined mutually by the Resident’s interests and the needs of the library. During the latter half of the second year, the Resident will be expected to complete a specific project involving one or more of the functional areas. The Resident will have the opportunity to engage in professional development and service activities in the library, on campus, and in the wider academic library community.


Required: Recent graduate (fewer than two years of professional experience) of an ALA-accredited master’s degree program in library and information science; strong interest in academic librarianship and willingness to spend time working in public services, in addition to other specialized goals; commitment to professional development and service; excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication, and presentation skills; ability to be flexible and adaptable to a variety of work environments; commitment to diversity.
