The J. Paul Leonard Library at San Francisco State University invites applicants for a tenure-track Senior Assistant or Associate Librarian position to fulfill a combination of responsibilities, primarily in research and instructional services with liaison responsibilities to departments in either STEM-related disciplines (physical sciences, engineering, mathematics) or biological and health sciences beginning spring 2017. The Library seeks individuals with a background or experience providing research assistance and group instruction in an academic or research library, creating instructional support materials and developing and managing collections in the sciences.

The J. Paul Leonard Library is a busy teaching-oriented institution supporting a community of 30,000 students as well as faculty and staff. The collections include more than four million items in all formats including an extensive collection of online databases and full-text resources. Librarians have full faculty status and are expected to meet faculty requirements for tenure and promotion. The library faculty is committed to providing mentoring and support to tenure track colleagues. The successful candidate will play a key role in helping to shape the future of the Library. Required Qualifications:

  • ALA-accredited Masters in Library and Information Science or equivalent.
  • At least one year of professional post-MLS academic library experience, including professional responsibilities for group instruction and research assistance.
  • Ability to design, deliver and assess clear and concise instructional presentations and training workshops; familiarity with instructional design and courseware
  • Commitment to engage in research and scholarship, and ability to meet departmental and campus criteria for promotion and tenure.
  • Ability to provide in-person and electronic research assistance to library users; may require occasional evening or weekend hours.
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse campus constituencies.
  • Working knowledge of new and emerging technologies and familiarity with their impact on higher education and research.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member or leader of a team.
  • Ability to work effectively with culturally diverse campus constituencies.
  • Ability to adapt to rapid change and to exercise creativity and initiative.
  • Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Strong service ethic.

Desired Qualifications:

  • At least two years of professional post-MLS academic library experience, including professional responsibilities for group instruction and research assistance.
  • Undergraduate, graduate degree or equivalent training/work experience in the biological, health or physical sciences, engineering or mathematics.
  • Knowledge and experience with collection development supporting university curricula
  • Active involvement in professional development activities with a record of scholarly contributions and achievements in the profession.
  • Knowledge of the research process and evolving models of scholarly communication, open access, data management, and other trends in information science.
  • Familiarity with disciplinary electronic databases and major reference works
  • Experience with web authoring, distance teaching & learning, and use of social media.
  • Strong analytical and proactive problem solving skills.
  • Reading knowledge of one or more non-English languages.


  • Contribute to a dynamic library education program; teach effective information seeking and critical thinking skills to both undergraduate and graduate students; work with discipline-based faculty on integrating information literacy skills; develop instructional support materials including screencasts, tutorials, and research guides.
  • Provide research assistance to library users in-person at service desks and electronically via email, instant and/or text messaging
  • Serve as a subject liaison to assigned programs and disciplines, teaching research workshops and supporting student research.
  • Build and maintain curriculum-driven collections for assigned subject areas.
  • Contribute to shared governance by serving on committees, working groups and task forces for the Library, University, and CSU and actively participate in Library planning.
  • Establish a record of progressive scholarly and professional achievement to fulfill the University requirements for retention, tenure, and promotion.
