The Library of the University of California, Berkeley seeks a creative, collaborative, and diligent individual to join a growing team of educators and service providers supporting UC Berkeley faculty, researchers, students, and staff with needs related to scholarly communication, copyright, and research-related information policy matters.

The UC Berkeley Library is an internationally renowned research and teaching facility at the nation’s premier public university. A highly diverse and intellectually rich environment, Berkeley serves a campus community of approximately 27,400 undergraduate students, 10,700 graduate students, and 1,600 faculty members. The Library comprises 20 campus libraries, including the Doe/Moffitt Libraries, The Bancroft Library, the C.V. Starr East Asian Library, and numerous subject specialty libraries. With a collection of more than 11 million volumes and a collections budget of over $15 million, the Library offers extensive collections in all formats and robust services to connect users with the collections and build their research skills.

The Library’s Office of Scholarly Communication Services (OSCS), established in 2016 and led by the Scholarly Communication Officer, helps scholars use, create, and publish scholarly information by providing guidance and support throughout the knowledge lifecycle. The program provides services in ways that promote the open dissemination, discoverability, accessibility, and preservation of scholarly resources—while helping scholars navigate and maximize their impact in the changing scholarly publishing landscape. OSCS services and support are critical to effecting the Library’s Strategic Plan, which establishes the Library’s commitment to championing and transforming the practices of scholarly communication to increase access, reduce cost, and improve dissemination of scholarship.


Reporting to OSCS’ Scholarly Communication Officer and serving as a key member of the scholarly communication program, the Scholarly Communication & Copyright Librarian will bear the following essential job duties:

  • Consults with faculty, researchers, and students regarding scholarly communication and copyright-related research needs;
  • Supports faculty, staff, and students with services, outreach, and instruction related to scholarly communication and publishing, including: copyright fair use and permissions; author rights; text & data mining; data publishing and licensing; information policy; research impact; institutional repositories and scholarly publishing platforms; affordable course content and open educational resources (OERs);
  • Advances Library efforts to develop and promote copyright education programs and copyright best practices among faculty, researchers, and students;
  • Helps advise UC Berkeley faculty, staff, and students on submission of works to the UC system’s repository,, and compliance with federal or funder access mandates;
  • Serves as a Library & campus resource on issues related to open access scholarship and affordable course content or OERs, and conducts outreach and educational programming on these topics;
  • Works with liaisons/subject librarians to develop educational materials and provide relevant outreach and programming to increase awareness about scholarly communication issues;
  • Helps maintain OSCS reporting efforts, and develop and execute OSCS strategic directions;
  • Monitors and reports on trends, legal requirements, and best practices regarding scholarly communication, public access to research and data, copyright-related scholarly publishing issues, and OERs;
  • Participates in the Library’s Scholarly Communication Expertise Group and relevant Library- or campus-wide entities; and
  • Contributes to OSCS’ web presence, tools, and materials.

UC Berkeley librarians are expected to participate in in library-wide planning and governance, and work effectively in a shared decision-making environment. Advancement is partially based upon professional contributions beyond the primary assignment. The successful candidate will show evidence or promise of such contributions to the Library, campus, UC System, and profession.

Minimum Basic Qualification at Time of Application:

  • American Library Association-accredited Master’s degree or equivalent degree, or current enrollment in a program working toward that degree.

Additional Required Qualifications by Start Date of Position:

  • American Library Association-accredited Master’s degree or equivalent degree;
  • Knowledge of copyright, licensing, and other IP issues and trends related to scholarly
    communication or in an academic environment;
  • Knowledge of scholarly publishing, including open access publishing, academic
    publishing platforms, licensing, and business models;
  • Experience providing reference and/or instructional services related to scholarly
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing highly responsive public service, and ability to
    work effectively with diverse staff and campus user communities;
  • Demonstrated analytical, organizational, problem solving, and interpersonal skills;
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills;
  • Capacity to thrive in a dynamic environment, respond effectively to shifting needs and
    priorities of library constituents, and a willingness to be flexible with assignments.

Additional Preferred Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor, or at least two years of experience providing copyright or licensing services and guidance in an academic setting;
  • At least one year of relevant experience in an academic library;
  • Experience developing innovative services to enhance research and/or teaching;
  • Experience engaging in collaborative projects and programs at the local, regional, national, and/or international level;
