Collections and Metadata Librarian, UC Davis Mabie Law Library

UC Davis Mabie Law Library seeks a forward-thinking, motivated, service-oriented professional to join our team as a Collections and Metadata Librarian.

This position, an Assistant or Associate Librarian, oversees the department responsible for library resource processing and operations. In addition to supervisory responsibilities, the position participates in collection management and works collaboratively with other librarians on resource allocations. The position serves on library committees, and participates in discussions regarding library programs, services, operations, facilities and procedures. The position reports to the Library Director.

About the Law Library:
The Mabie Law Library is an integral part of the UC Davis School of Law, and provides services that support the teaching, research, and scholarship of its students and faculty. The Library houses over 375,000 volumes in print and provides access to more than 10,000 databases which are provided through its library licenses, campus, and UC-wide license agreements.

Commensurate with qualifications and experience ($56,364 to $77,598)

Duties and Responsibilities:
The Collections and Metadata Librarian oversees several functional areas of library services: Sierra oversight and record quality control, resource inventory, preservation and circulation control, interlibrary loan, and cataloging, with some supervisory responsibilities. The position monitors, analyzes, and develops efficient and effective workflows; communicates with other library partners, and vendors; and has overall responsibility for data and statistics for the unit.

The position facilitates patron access to library resources through the Sierra library system. This includes the creation, maintenance, and enhancement of metadata across multiple discovery platforms and the library’s Sierra system and UC discovery platform, and delivery of library resources to patrons. The position manages catalog data and cataloging services; creates, maintains, and enhances access to electronic resources; and oversees the acquisitions budget expenditures for all library resources, both print and electronic and serial subscriptions.

The position contributes to overall library operations by participating in library unit meetings, strategic planning, annual reports, development of policies, procedures and practices that relate to the purchasing, processing and receiving of library resources. The librarian keeps abreast of current standards and emerging technologies to effectively manage the unit and to provide continuous support and patron assistance in accessing the library’s resources.

Applicants should have the capacity to work in a dynamic library environment, responding to shifting needs and priorities of library users, and a willingness to be flexible with assignments. They should be able to work collaboratively and creatively with a diverse group of individuals and departments within and beyond the law school.

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in library or information science from ALA-accredited graduate school or equivalent
  • Two to four years of demonstrated experience or knowledge of concepts, principles, and practice in library technical services
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with integrated library systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or experience with metadata tools, bibliographic data, cataloging standards, and quality control, in both print & digital environments
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work in a collaborative environment
  • User-focused and committed to service excellence

Desired Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated employment history or job skills that show knowledge of types and uses of legal materials and experience with bibliographic access to legal information
  • Work experience in an academic, research, or law library
  • Supervisory experience
