Metadata Services (MS) connects our UC San Diego community to intellectual and creative content and materials by analyzing, describing and organizing resources using methods and systems that promote discovery. MS provides, augments and normalizes metadata for digitized and born digital objects and for tangible resources— particularly collections of distinction for which UC San Diego is known. MS delivers and manages bibliographic access to licensed and open access electronic resources in all formats. The program includes approximately 33 FTE staff. This position will be part of the Music and Media Metadata Unit, which specializes in providing metadata for digital and tangible materials in audio, moving image and notated music formats, and focuses on the specialized requirements of these materials. This position will also provide cataloging for books on an as needed basis working in collaboration with the Books and Serials Metadata Unit.

The Media and Open Access Metadata Specialist prepares and edits bibliographic descriptions and authority, and records for (monographic materials) both online and tangible, in audio, visual and textual formats (for materials purchased for the collection and for open access titles). Reviews MARC and non-MARC metadata for digital projects destined for the Library’s digital repository.

  • Working knowledge of the rules, tools and best practices relevant to creating original descriptive cataloging in the audio, visual, and books formats, and the ability to apply them.
  • Working knowledge of music history and classical music genres sufficient to provide, evaluate, or correct bibliographic description, subject analysis, name and uniform title access points for sound recordings.
  • Strong planning and organizational skills. Ability to set and maintain priorities, meet deadlines, perform tasks with accuracy and attention to details, and meet quality and quantity standards.
  • Strong communication skills, both verbal and written, and the ability to work well with others.
  • Working knowledge of computer systems and software used in library technical services, as well as spreadsheets and other general productivity tools and programs.
