The University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC), a public research university and one of the ten campuses of the University of California (UC) System, invites applications and nominations for the position of University Librarian. UCSC seeks an innovative leader and experienced library administrator to serve as University Librarian. Reporting to the Campus Provost/Executive Vice Chancellor, the successful candidate will lead the UCSC Library in providing outstanding services to the UCSC community while also extending the University System’s unique library resources to benefit researchers around the world.

UCSC Libraries are part of the University of California Libraries, a consortium that collectively represents the largest public academic and research library in the world, with 44 million items in its holdings, access to more than 364 electronic databases, and 46,000 full-text online journals. The University Library is home to the largest print collection between Santa Barbara and Stanford with holdings of more than 2.21 million volumes. The library has received over $1million in grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services to fund digital library activities, including the development of the Grateful Dead Archive Online.


The University Library is an integral part of the University of California, Santa Cruz. UCSC’s McHenry Library was recently reopened after an addition, remodel and earthquake retrofit of the original building were completed. The successful remodeling resulted in a marked increase of student and faculty use. The Science & Engineering Library houses collections in the areas of engineering and the physical and biological sciences, and the renovation of this building is part of the campus’ current comprehensive campaign.


The new University Librarian will provide visionary leadership for the Library. S/he will continue to build the Library as a center for the intellectual life of the University with vibrant connections to all academic units, be a strong and effective advocate for the Library on campus, leverage and strengthen the Library’s resources, lead and develop a service-oriented staff, continue to plan for the creative development of the Library’s physical space, and support and encourage active participation in systemwide activities and initiatives. As a member of the Administrative Leadership Team, the University Librarian will also collaborate and communicate with other campus leaders, working toward the holistic integration of all aspects of academia, administration, and operations, with UCSC’s collective mission in mind.


Basic Qualifications


  • MLS from an ALA-accredited library school or equivalent degree.
  • A record of accomplishment in librarianship and service to the profession.


Preferred Qualifications


  • Strong executive leadership background in academic libraries with substantial management experience in planning, budget, and human resources.
  • A realistic leadership style that is willing to have frank and open discussions while fostering collegiality, cooperation, and consensus building.
  • History of proactive leadership on issues of diversity in the workplace.
  • Proven experience or a potential for success in development, fundraising, and public relations in an academic library setting.
  • Commitment to the support of scholarly research including a demonstrated awareness of trends in scholarly communication and the development of print and digital collections.
  • Understanding of evolving issues and trends in higher education, libraries, open access, and scholarly communication as well as the ability to engage campus, national, and international groups in meaningful discussions of these issues.
  • Demonstrated skill in advocating for the library’s partnership role in campus and statewide initiatives.


Compensation will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s experience. This position is subject to the financial disclosure requirement of the California Reform Act of 1974 and requires a successful background check. The University of California, Santa Cruz is located on a 2,000-acre campus overlooking the city of Santa Cruz and the Monterey Bay Marine Sanctuary. Santa Cruz is located 75 miles south of San Francisco and 50 miles north of Monterey and Carmel. The town of Santa Cruz boasts a moderate climate year-round and is a recreational paradise, with mountains, beaches, and redwood forests within a short distance. Santa Cruz has long been home to a diverse community of writers and artists and the region offers myriad cultural opportunities.
