Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s in Library and Information Science degree (or equivalent) from an American Library Association accredited program and institution official notification of completion of the master’s degree by June 1, 2014
  • Demonstrated fluency in at least one language in the following areas: French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, German, and/or Russian
  • Demonstrated ability to fulfill the scholarly and service expectations of a tenure-track position in the Library.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide library instruction, including the ability to impart information literacy skills and concepts, to develop effective instructional materials, and to show students how to formulate information-seeking strategies utilizing critical thinking skills
  • Demonstrated ability to evaluate, select, and review information resources in relation to curricular and collection needs
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple tasks and projects simultaneously
  • Commitment to and/or expertise in educating and serving a diverse student population

Desired/Preferred Qualifications

  • Graduate degree in one of the following language areas: French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Arabic, German, and/or Russian, OR competency in communicating in one of the above languages, OR a graduate degree in Linguistics
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with university faculty, staff, and students
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies and innovation, and demonstrated ability to apply these concepts to library applications
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a flexible and rapidly changing technological environment
  • A record of involvement in library professional organizations


  • Provide in-person and online reference services at a service-oriented and all-purpose reference desk approximately 6 hours per week, including some evenings and weekends
  • Provide library instruction and consultation services to the students and faculty in the Department of Romance, German, Russian Languages and Literatures (RGRLL) and the Department of Linguistics
  • Serve as the Library’s subject specialist for the two above mentioned departments, which includes evaluating, selecting, and reviewing information resources in relation to curricular and collection needs
  • Work closely with subject librarians and other members of the University community as appropriate
  • Engage in library and university governance and scholarship, including research and publication required for tenure and promotion
