Position Summary Information


Primary Purpose Working with the Dean of the University Library, the Assistant Dean administers library collections, services, programs, and operations to carry out the mission and goals of the University Library. The librarian’s role in the academy is changing, and the Assistant Dean must be on the forward edge of that change, able to collaborate closely with the academic enterprise and to apply innovative thinking, effective planning, and tireless advocacy to these and other challenges.
Essential Functions • Manages day-to-day operations and facilities, including supervision of activities of selected departments in conjunction with department coordinators, • Supports faculty and staff development, and contributes to library management decisions, long-range planning, program development, budget management, and assessment. • Maintains current knowledge with all aspects of scholarly communication issues, higher education trends and research needs in the context of rapidly developing technologies. • Serves as a member of the Library’s management team, contributing to strategic planning efforts, program development and assessment, budget formulation and allocation of resources in support of the University Library’s mission. • Collaborates with colleagues and faculty in the development and implementation of effective management strategies and innovative collections, services, and programs, across all areas of the Library, to provide the best user-centered environment. • Seeks creative and collaborative funding opportunities and fosters grant initiatives. • Collaborates with other campus units to represent the Library and achieve university-wide goals. • Collaborates and actively participates in local, regional, national, or international organizations regarding related issues; • Serves on/participates in University and Library committees, task forces, and teams as appropriate; • Engages in scholarly/creative/professional activity as appropriate.
Qualifications • ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science; • Minimum 5-7 years professional experience in an academic library or equivalent, including demonstrated record of progressively responsible administrative experience and professional achievement; • Excellent analytical, organizational, and project management skills; • Sound knowledge of issues/trends in academic libraries and understanding of information technologies; • Demonstrated ability in leadership, decision-making, budget management, and supervision of librarians and staff; • Passion for quality library service centered around student learning and characterized by collaboration with faculty in support of teaching and research needs; • In-depth knowledge of more than one library service area and ability to view issues from a broad, library-wide perspective; • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively in a multicultural setting and a deep commitment to supporting and promoting diversity in higher education.
Physical Requirements Requires extended periods of sitting; occasional walking, standind and infrequent bending, stooping and climbing stairs. Work Environment/Work Week/Travel Work is primarily performed in a standard office environment. Work performed during standard business hours of 8AM – 5PM, M-F.  Additional hours may be required to meet business needs or deadlines.  Hours may be modified during summer. Minimal travel required to professional meetings or conferences.
